Aptos, CA psychologist: Therapy dogs can go anywhere …

Trained Dogs Can Assist Many Ways

Going into the Santa Cruz COSTCO ahead of me was a woman with a labrador dog. The dog looked like a well trained dog. The lab had a blue cover on his back. I said how nice to see well trained dogs out and about with people. She said that she has a disability and hence the dog goes with her everywhere. She got her dog through Canine Companions for Independence.

Anybody else out there that wants to take their well trained dogs into COSTCO and other places?

Why is it that only people with disabilities can take dogs everywhere? So long as a dog is trained why not include the dog in many more places than they usually are?

In Watsonville, California, Lance Stackhouse runs Canine Clinic. Dogs can be certified as therapy dogs and there are other certifications they can earn.

Dear Rep. Sam Farr: Turning over 1/6th of the economy to BIG government is not “change” we want.

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

Dear House Representative Sam Farr,

Health Care Rally

I listened to the Town Meetings which  you held.  You were adamantly for a  government option, Single Payer plan.  You did not listen to the folks who want to keep their own health plan and  do not want more government control.  You kept saying “oh, you can keep your plan …” (more…)

Diagnosis of ….. autism… versus a diagnosis of cancer ….

Diagnosis

Medical Diagnosis: You go to a doctor. He/She says that you have a diagnosis of cancer. You say, what do I do …? The doctor suggests various treatments. Here, diagnosis is the flip side of treatment. Nobody BUYS or WANTS a diagnosis of cancer. If a person has cancer then treatment may involve radiation, surgery or chemotherapy or a combination of all three. All these treatments have significant medical side effects. None of these should be undertaken lightly.

Psychiatric/psychology diagnosis:
Parents are concerned about mental and emotional development of their child. They take their child to a doctor — this one is a psychologist and / or psychiatrist. The parents want maximum services to address the concerns they see in the development of their child. So long as the services don’t hurt the child why not maximize them? That is the parents point of view.

Does the doctor conservatively diagnose or? Most of the treatments offerred for children with a diagnosis of autism do not have substantial side effects as in cancer. No lose of hair or feeling lousy because of radiation. So why not maximize treatment to assist the child? Why not “err” and offer maximum kinds of treatment?

Ethics: I say that it is best to do as accurate a diagnosis as possible and not “err” in order to maximize services. Better to incrementally come back and add necessary services rather than overload at the beginning.

This is an ethical dilemma. Does the MD give out drugs that are not necessary but the patient came all that way, waited an hour and expects to get “something”? Does the psychologist diagnose Autistic Disorder 299.0 and not PDD-NOS knowing that one will probably maximize all possible services and the other may not?

Another issue is who pays. If the patient pays for it akin to buying groceries then he may decide that some services are crucial and others can wait. If the “government” is paying the tab — how does that affect decisions?

Re-elect Bob Lee as District Attorney, Santa Cruz County, CA?

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Bob Lee was elected 8 years ago as District Attorney. So, why re-elect Bob Lee?

At that time, Bob Lee ran against D.A. incumbent Kate Canalis.

Lots of people told Bob Lee that he could not win against the incumbent. Well, he did. With lots of support from all sorts of sources.

So how has Bob Lee done as District Attorney? In the last 5 years he has won every major criminal case Wow!

How involved is he? Bob Lee gets up in the middle of the night and goes to the crime scene. He is a “hands-on” D.A. Great!

Who gets hired? The Santa Cruz District Attorney office seeks — and gets — excellent beginning attorneys. Let’s hope that “those beginners” stay around whether as Assistant D.A. or in private practice. Great!!

What kind of training do the D.A.’s get?
Bob Lee’s office trains continually so that experienced attorneys pass on what they know. That makes sense. Great!

How are cases assigned? The attorney assigned takes the case from start to finish. No more who has my case this week. Great!

What is morale like in the office? Bob Lee’s enthusiasm permeates the office. Every government office needs this!

How are victims of crimes treated? There are criminals and there are VICTIMS of crimes. Victims of crime are treated with sensitivity. The physical environment where they are interviewed is attractive and supportive. Good Job!

Bob Lee is a “hands on attorney” who is fair, honest and cares about all of the citizens in Santa Cruz County.

Thank you, Bob Lee! Good job! Let’s RE-ELECT Bob Lee as D.A.

Would you take a $100 if someone picked it up off ground and asked if it was yours?

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Would you take money? If you see someone walking towards you on the street holding out a $100 bill and asking if you want it, most people will avoid the person, say something like “I don’t come that cheap!” or “No, I do not have change…” We all know those people are wacky.

But if in any kind of minimum relationship and someone bends over and picks up a $100 bill and asks if it is yours…. what do YOU do? Do you take it? Then you can be bribed.

The article below is why to buy IMPORTED tomatoes and not buy from Safeway. And it is about BRIBES and TAINTED tomatoes. (more…)

Napa Hospital Chief Arrested for Alleged Sexual Assault of a Foster Son 10 Years Ago

Foulk, Chief of Napa State Hospital, charged with molest

Certainly a young man of 20 can remember what happened 10 years ago. But, why wait until someone who harmed you is in charge of a hospital to come forward? One does not have to be in charge of the joint to continue to do bad things.

Do you think Foulk has the “look” of a molester? Someone who works at the Santa Cruz County jail told me that she thought Foulk “looks” like a molester. I disagree. There is no “look”… (more…)

The Heritage Foundation is a great source of info

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

It is yet to be seen if President Obama’s health care summit is a genuine attempt to reach out and resolve health care in a bipartisan manner, or a ruse to check the box on bipartisanship before proposing another liberal Washington takeover of health care. Recent reports that the President and Congressional leaders are secretly writing yet another bill to attach to the filibuster-proof reconciliation bill certainly indicate the latter, and if that is the case, conservatives should boycott the event, and call it out for what it really is. But if the President and Congressional leadership are committed to bipartisan reform, there are real grounds of potential agreement among Republicans and Democrats.

Member Questions of the Week of February 22, 2010

Joseph from San Antonio, TX asks: “Is there anything constitutionally that prevents persons from buying health care plans across state lines? If not, what is it in law that is stopping this now?” OUR ANSWER: Existing federal law provides for an almost exclusive state regulation of health insurance. Meaning, each state can set its own rules and regulations that an insurance company must follow to receive a license to provide insurance in that particular state. There are exceptions, as there are federal laws governing group insurance and self-insured employer health plans. Yet, there is nothing in the Constitution forbidding interstate commerce in health insurance. Under Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution, Congress is authorized to regulate such interstate commerce. In the case of health insurance it has chosen to leave the regulation up to the states, which renders health insurance an intra-state phenomenon. Thus, there is no national market for health insurance as there is for other goods and services in the economy. Many state regulators and larger insurance companies prefer this approach since it enhances the power of state regulators over the terms and conditions of coverage while also limiting the supply of available options in any given state.

eligibility for regional center services for mental retardation, autism and other conditions

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

The regional centers in California assist persons who are substantially disabled in several areas and have a diagnosis of mental retardation, autism, cerebral palsy or seizure disorders. Licensed psychologists employed by the regional centers assess and make the diagnosis and the regional center clinical team determines substantial handicap and eligibility.

Is the applicant substantially handicapped in several areas? To determine substantial handicap there are various rating scales that can assist. Gathering rating information from both the family and also another source (such as a teacher or social worker) is typically done. The Adaptive Behavior Assessment System (ABAS) is one quite good rating scale that may be used.

Jewish World Review

Is the Divine beyond us or within us?

By Rabbi David Aaron

Misconceptions of Biblical proportions about the Creator

http://www.JewishWorldReview.com | The Torah (Exodus 25:8) recounts that G-d instructed the Israelites to build a sanctuary, telling Moses, “Let them build a sanctuary and I will dwell in them.” Note that G-d did not say, “I will dwell in the sanctuary.” G-d said, “in them.”

Is G-d beyond us or within us?

One day my son Ananiel and my two daughters, Leyadya and Ne’ema, burst into my study. They had obviously been fighting over something and were very upset. I could see that I was chosen to be the lucky arbitrator to resolve another case of sibling rivalry. They shouted at each other, “You go, you ask Daddy.” “No, no! You go, you go.” Finally Ananiel, who was five at that time, took the challenge and said, “O.K., O.K. Daddy, isn’t it true that G-d is a boy?”

Ne’ema and Leyadya, ages eight and nine, had tears in their eyes. I could hear them silently pleading with me, “Please no, please no. Tell us it’s not true. It’s bad enough our brother is a boy. Surely, G-d is really a girl.”

I said to them, “G-d is not a boy and G-d is not a girl. G-d is beyond that. We may talk about G-d as if He is a boy. But we really don’t mean it literally.”

They all looked at me in shock and confusion. There was this awkward silence, and then suddenly my son blurted out, “You’re wrong! He’s a boy.” And he stomped out of the room.

Unfortunately, many adults actually believe that G-d is male. And it seems from a first glance at the Book of Genesis that the Torah would agree. Throughout G-d is referred to as “He.” Although in much of Jewish tradition we find G-d described as a father and king, there are references to G-d also as a “She,” as mother or queen.

However, those of us who are in the know understand that all this is metaphor.

According to Kabbalah, G-d is beyond descriptions that use neat and easy logical categories of either/or.

Most people think that G-d is infinite. But that is incorrect. The infinite is that which goes on and on in space. However, G-d created space and is therefore not bound to the laws and limitation of space. If we describe G-d as infinite, what we really mean is that G-d is spaceless. Infinite is the opposite of finite, while spaceless means “free from the limitations of space.” The One who is spaceless is free to be both beyond space and within space simultaneously. Therefore, G-d is beyond this finite world and yet G-d completely inheres every inch of the earth.

Most people think that G-d is eternal. But that is incorrect. Eternity would be that which goes on and on in time. But G-d created time and is therefore not confined to the limitations of time. If we describe G-d as eternal, what we really mean is that G-d is timeless. The eternal is the opposite of the temporal, while timeless means “free of the limitations of time.” The One who is timeless is free to be both beyond time and within time at the same time. Therefore, G-d is both beyond time and yet within every moment, completely filling it with His entire presence.

And when we say that G-d is One, we really mean that G-d is non-dual. One is limited; it is the opposite of many. But non-duality is free of the confines of one or many. Non-duality is free to be beyond the many and within the many. Therefore, G-d is beyond you, me, and everyone else in this world, and yet also within us.

How can the unlimited be expressed within the limited? How can the unlimited G-d be expressed within time, space, and finite beings?

If the unlimited could not be expressed within the limited, then that would be a limitation. Ultimate freedom must include the freedom to choose to be restricted. Otherwise freedom wouldn’t be free; it would imply a limitation of choices — you could not choose to be restricted and limited.

Therefore, according to Kabbalah, G-d is free to be both beyond time and within each moment, beyond space and within every inch, beyond multiplicity and within billions of finite human beings. G-d is free to be manifest as one hundred percent transcendent and yet also one hundred percent immanent.

Of course, this is a contradiction and is not logical. However, we have to always be reminded that all this is from our limited point of view. From G-d’s perspective there are not two aspects to the Divine. It is only when we describe the divine truth with our limited language that we need to speak in this paradoxical way. As one sage put it, Kabbalah is not the path to paradise but to paradox.

Kabbalah explains that the manifestation of divine transcendence is identified with the power of masculinity. However, the manifestation of divine immanence is identified with the power of femininity.

In Kabbalah, masculinity is the power of rational detachment, the ability to see from outside as an objective observer. Femininity is the power to empathize, to be intimate, the ability to feel a situation from the inside, as a participant.

The Torah teaches that the first human being was created in the image of G-d. However, the verse that expresses this in Genesis is very strange. Here is the translation from the Soncino Press version, chapter 1, verse 27: “And G-d created man in His own image, in the image of G-d He created him; male and female He created them.”

Was the first human being a “him” or a “them”? The answer is yes! The first human being was a single whole entity that included two sexes. The first human was not really male but actually beyond genders — including both male and female.

At a Jewish wedding ceremony, a blessing is recited that might seem puzzling: “Blessed are You, G-d, King of the universe, who created the human being in Your image.” It might seem that this blessing would be more appropriately recited at the birth of a child than at a wedding. However, when a child is born you really do not see the full image of G-d. The full image of G-d is only manifest when the male and female unite.

The manifestation of G-d as outside of time, space, and finite beings is described as masculine. The manifestation of G-d as within time, space, and finite beings is described as feminine.

Therefore, G-d is not male or female. G-d is not beyond us or within us. G-d is beyond the either/or.

It is up to us to become a living sanctuary; to think, speak and act in ways that empower us to experience G-d’s joyous truth.
