Firenze Sage: [Venders complain about] San Francisco occupiers

San Francisco venders complain about OWS

Dozens of the 200 or so campers in Justin Herman Plaza ambled off toward Third Street to protest President Obama’s visit. Others cooked up lunch for the homeless people who compose the majority of the camp. Still others lounged or napped among the 50 tents, tarp-covered rest areas and patches of grass.

A committee of protesters met in the morning to plan. The camp intends to stay while members try to rein in littering, outdoor bathroom activities and the like.

Among those complaining to the city about the camp are vendors who operate as many as 175 sales booths across the plaza from the protesters. They say campers are stealing scarves, jewelry, chairs, tools and other items.

“Thefts from our booths have gone from once a month to every day since that camp went in,” said John Tunui, who manages the booths.
