eat that pain away? or maybe wipe it away with salve? right here in Santa Cruz (herbs & foods for health)

joint pain

Eat that pain away?   Some foods that you can eat for pain relief include horseradish for sinus, blue berries for urinary tract infection, cherries for joint pain and tumeric for chronic pain. Heart burn? Try apple cider ….

Of course check  first with your M.D. for any possible interactions between medications and herbal remedies. Talk to your MD before you start consuming large amounts of any herbal  supplement.   Some herbs reduce blood thinners and affect blood pressure for example.  You can check for possible interactions online.

Or maybe wipe that pain away with a medicinal herb salve?   What about the aches that may be relieved with a salve made from medicinal herbs?   A Santa Cruz teenager has published a book which tells you where you can find the herbs and how  to make a salve for pain relief. His book is available from the Herb Room in Santa Cruz located at 1130 Mission St.  (831 429-8108.  Proceeds from his book go to assist homeless persons in the area.

to sleep and really sleep! Yes it’s possible … what to do …

sleep lke a baby?  Turn off computers, TV, smart phones an hour before –  as devices make it harder to feel sleepy ….

Sleep like a baby?  Try the following suggestions for better sleep ….

Experts have standard rules on what is known as sleep hygiene: The room should be cold but not too cold; it should be dark and quiet; and you should follow rituals that signal it is time for bed. Brushing one’s teeth, putting on pajamas and turning off the lights can be signals to the body that it’s time to secrete melatonin, the hormone that helps humans feel sleepy.

KEEP YOUR BEDROOM DARK AND QUIET.  Use black-out shades, an eye mask, and ear plugs to shut out the world while your body sleeps.

FIND THE OFF SWITCH.  Turn off the computers, tablets, televisions, and smartphones an hour before you go to bed.  Studies show the artificial light coming from such devices can keep you awake and make it difficult to feel drowsy.

AVOID CAFFEINE AFTERNOON.  Watch out for hidden sources of caffeine, such as medications, chocolate, and dessert drinks.  Try green tea if you need a pick-me-up in the late afternoon because it only contains 20 mg of caffeine.

NO BOOZE BEFORE YOU SNOOZE.  Don’t drink alcohol within 3 hours of bedtime.  Alcohol keeps you from reaching the deep stages of sleep and dehydrates you, too.  Many people who have cocktails after dinner complain of waking up in the middle of the night.

DON’T NAP.  Napping regularly will disturb your sleep cycle. Avoid sleeping in the day. Keep to 8 hours a night and ideally nothing more.

CREATE A ROUTINE.  Control your sleeping pattern. Going to bed and waking up at roughly the same time every day, with few exceptions works best.

SLOW DOWN.  Encourage everyone in your house (including yourself!) to start winding down at a reasonable hour by doing something relaxing, like reading a book, taking a bath, or having a warm mug of herbal tea.  You’ll feel so much better the next morning.

Get it in writing! [tear down your tree house says city]

tree house must be torn down says city

Supreme Court is last chance for a couple who built a tree house after told in a phone call that they did not need a permit.   Then the city weighed in and said that they needed a permit to build a tree house. Many thousands of dollars later the couple appeals to the Supreme Court for redress.

If told no, that the tree house must be torn down, the couple must  now get a permit to tear it down. Ironic?

#Me too …. movement: What women say privately …

#metoo

What  women say privately about  the  #Me too…movement differs considerably from what’s said in public.  So says an opinion piece published by the New York Times recently.

Aptos Psychologist:  Seems like the #Me Too …. encourages young woman to view themselves as frail victims?  Let’s raise kids (boys and girls) to view themselves as strong and capable.

Remove Russian spyware [Kaspersky] from your personal computer? USA removes all Kaspersky products from government computers …

Kaspersky Labs removed from all USA government products. Is your computer safe?

Kaspersky Labs no longer operates on any USA government computers.  Is it on your personal computer?  There are various ways to remove if you choose to.   Here’s one link to remove Kaspersky.

From the Wall Street Journal re Kaspersky products:

During hearings on the matter on Capitol Hill, “I thought the most damning example” came from intelligence-community representatives, she said in an interview. “When each of them got asked would you put Kaspersky on your own personal computer and the answer was no, that’s a pretty strong message that maybe we should be taking a look at this.”

In September, the DHS banned Kaspersky products from government computers, instructing agencies to remove any Kaspersky software and report back on where it was found. The public statement accompanying the ban reads like a declassified version of the intelligence community’s suspicion regarding Kaspersky:

“The risk that the Russian government, whether acting on its own or in collaboration with Kaspersky, could capitalize on access provided by Kaspersky products to compromise federal information and information systems directly implicates U.S. national security.”

Kaspersky says the DHS ban has had a “severe adverse effect” on its commercial operations in the U.S., with retailers removing its products from shelves and an unprecedented number of product returns. All the focus on collusion and interference by Russia put the spotlight on what the USA can do — and what we as citizens can do — to protect ourselves.

_______________

Aptos Psychologist Cameron Jackson:   It says it all when ‘those in the know’ refuse to put  anti-virus  / internet protection products by Kaspersky  Labs on their own personal computer.  All the focus on collusion and interference by Russia put the spotlight on what the USA can do — and what we as citizens can do — to protect ourselves.

Want lower premiums, more choice & freedom from Obama-Care rules? Trump’s proposed rule lets individuals & small businesses freedom from ACA

Trump's health care reform
Trump’s proposed health care rule offers relief from high premiums and freedom to choose

Whew!  Trump offers relief from Obama-Care’s many requirements   and high premiums.   Trump’s health care proposal  [The Wall Street Journal, Friday, Jan 5, 2018] offers  millions of self-employed and small businesses freedom to purchase  health insurance plans that don’t comply with Obama’s  Affordable Care Act.

Time to speak up and say what you think.  The new rule will be published Friday in the Federal Register and undergo a 60 day comment period.

The Trump administration also plans to release a proposal to pave the way for more short-term health policies with fewer benefits.

The proposal was praised by the National Restaurant Association and the National Retail Association as a way for small  businesses to have the same bargaining power as large companies, leveling the playing field.  Self-employed people who don’t get subsidies also heralded the proposed changes in rules.

—————————–

Aptos Psychologist Cameron Jackson:  Getting rid of the requirement that all Americans must purchase health insurance — which is part of the recent legislation that reduces taxes for 80% of Americans — that was a huge step towards more choice.  This proposal means that mom’s working from home as sole proprietors can get health care for themselves and their  family. Whew.

So how many noncitizens get removed from Santa Cruz County & San Francisco voter rolls?

How many noncitizens vote in CA sanctuary cities such as Santa Cruz and San Francisco?

Do noncitizens vote in California? How many?   Are they removed from the voting rolls?   Are there more noncitizens voting in certain areas such as  sanctuary cities, i.e. San Francisco and Santa Cruz CA?

Non-citizens  do vote   — according to investigations by Public Interest Legal Foundation — in Texas, Virginia, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Public Interest Legal Foundation has built a record case studies uncovering noncitizen voter registration and voting in a growing number of states.

  • In October 2016, PILF found noncitizens registered to vote in Philadelphia. Half of those voted in at least one election.
  • In May 2017, PILF found 5,556 voters removed by the Commonwealth of Virginia as “non-citizens”. Roughly 33% voted. This research followed an initial October 2016 sampling that yielded 1,000 noncitizens.
  • In September 2017, PILF found 1,069 noncitizens within New Jersey’s voter registration system.
  • In October 2017, PILF testified before the Pennsylvania House State Government Committee on the matter of noncitizen voting in the state and encouraged an official review to identify more ineligible voters. Testimony was taken again by the PA Senate State Government Committee in December 2017.
  • In December 2017, PILF put the State of Pennsylvania on notice for failing to release records related to noncitizens removed from the voter rolls. Litigation can commence as early as January 2018.

Comment by Aptos Psychologist Cameron Jackson:  It certainly seems likely that noncitizens vote in California, a state  which makes it relatively  easy for noncitizens to get driver’s licenses and access to many government services.  Maybe it’s time to find out how good the integrity is of our CA voting rolls? CA’s Secretary of State has not been willing to provide information  concerning the integrity of the voter registration system.

how not to buy property: Trump’s son-in-law buys 666 Fifth Avenue in New York …. Ten years later, big trouble

How not to buy property: Trump’s son-in-law bought 666 Fifth Avenue

How not do buy property:   Trump’s son-in-law’s firm owns property that cannot pay for itself.   In 2006, at the height of the real-estate bubble, Kushner’s real-estate firm made an audacious purchase of 666 Fifth Avenue—prime Manhattan property. But just over 10 years later, that deal has reportedly crippled the company and has raised significant questions about Kushner himself.

An in-depth article by Bloomberg News in August gave a dour view of the purchase:

It was 2006—the height of the real-estate market boom—when Kushner Cos. agreed to buy 666 Fifth Avenue for $1.8 billion, then a record for a Manhattan building. All of it was borrowed except for $50 million. The company still holds half of a $1.2 billion mortgage, on which it hasn’t paid a cent. The full amount is due in February 2019.

Firenze Sage: I want my mama … says DACA dance instructor convicted of two DUI’s

Arthur Murray dance instructor faces deportation  related to two drunk drives

DACA illegal immigrant Gantulga   faces deportation.  His parents, who overstayed their visas, returned to Mongolia with two younger children leaving him behind.

The Washington Post published a profile of   Gantulga  Wednesday that downplayed his two drunk driving charges.

The headline of the piece focused on the illegal immigrant’s work as a dance teacher, stating, “He taught lawyers, vets and more how to ballroom dance. Now his students are trying to save him from deportation.”

Galtsog Gantulga, affectionately referred to by dance students as ‘G,’ was allowed into the United States through the Delayed Action for Child Arrivals (DACA) program. However, Gantulga lost his DACA status after he was caught drunk driving in 2016. Twice.

In the first incident, Gantulga hit a parked car. He reportedly fled the scene of the second. Sacchetti notes that Gantulga “took responsibility” for his crimes, spending a month in jail, selling his car, and joining Alcoholics Anonymous. But Gantulga also claims it “definitely wouldn’t have happened if my parents were here.” His parents left the country after they overstayed their visas. Leaving Gantulga behind,   his parents   returned to Mongolia with two younger children  born in the U.S.A.

————————————————————————————–

Firenze Sage:   Here we go again.”He took responsibility for his crimes.” Actually he fled the scene of the 2d drunk driving with an accident and then moaned that if his deported parents were here, it all never would have happened. Go and dance elsewhere.

Firenze Sage: A true hero [soldier Messah fresh out of boot camp]

soldier dies saving people in his apartment

A true story of heroism and sacrifice — exactly what we’ve come to expect from those who serve.

A soldier, home on Christmas leave, saved several lives when the apartment building he was living in became consumed by fire. PFC Emmanuel Mensah, fresh out of boot camp, had returned to his Bronx apartment to enjoy the holiday with friends and family but ended up giving his life to save others.

New York Times:

“He brought four people out,” said his uncle, Twum Bredu, who lives next door. “When he went to bring a fifth person out, the fire caught up with him.”
