Portland, Oregon  kicked off their celebration of Black History Month by kicking a major grocery store chain out of a black neighborhood this week.

City officials had been working with Trader Joe’s for more than a year to convince the grocery store to invest $8 million in a “historically African-American neighborhood.” A high crime neighborhood. The kind of place that First Lady Michelle Obama calls a “food desert” because large grocery stories will not open there.

But Trader Joe’s pulled out, said the Associated Press, after the Portland African American Leadership Forum said it would “Remain opposed to any development in N/NE Portland that does not primarily benefit the Black community.”

It said the grocery-store development would “increase the desirability of the neighborhood,” for “non-oppressed populations.”

 Spend lots of time with him. First lady Michelle Obama’s advice to Justin Bieber’s mother is to spend lots of time with her son and get to know who he’s hanging out with, the self-proclaimed “mom-in-chief” said in an interview released Friday.

“I would pull him close,” Obama said of the 19-year-old pop singer in an interview with Univision, when asked how she’d guide the troubled pop star right now if she were his mom. “I don’t know if it would be advice as much as action.

I would be very present in his life right now. And I would be probably with him a good chunk of the time, just there to talk, to figure out what’s going on in his head, to figure out who’s in his life and who’s not, you know.”

She added that she’s seen that her kids “just want you near, you know, they want that advice from a parent. They want to see you on a daily basis” and because Bieber is “still a kid, he’s still growing up,” that lesson applies. The singer has faced multiple arrests, and reports of drug and alcohol use.

In her latest interview with People Magazine, First Lady Michelle Obama was asked to name female role models she would like to emulate when she gets older.

Her choices? Actresses Cicely Tyson and Jane Fonda, infamously known as Hanoi Jane for supporting the enemy during the Vietnam War.

“I just went to see Cicely Tyson on Broadway. She is in her 80s [just turned 80 in December] and did a two-hour play with stamina and passion. I told her ‘I want to be you when I grow up!'” And then she added:

The Justice Department will significantly expand its definition of racial profiling. Why?

To prohibit federal agents from considering religion, national origin, gender and sexual orientation in their investigations, a government official said Wednesday.

The move addresses a decade of criticism from civil rights groups that say federal authorities have in particular singled out Muslims in counter terrorism investigations and Latinos for immigration investigations.

 Python strangles and kills a Bali security guard.

The lush Indonesian island of Bali is a tropical paradise full of world-class hotels, amazing beaches and ridiculous yoga retreats. It’s also home to the occasional terrorist bombing (2002 and 2005) and, of course, killer pythons.

One of those pythons strangled a security guard to death outside the Bali Hyatt, a luxury hotel in Bali’s Sanur area on Friday, reports the Daily Mail.

The victim, 59-year-old Ambar Arianto Mulyo, was an employee at a restaurant nearby.

He managed to capture the 15-foot-long snake, which had for awhile been menacing the hotel.

Mulyo spotted the snake and successfully got his hands on the serpent’s head and tail. Then, however, he made the fatal mistake of hoisting the python on his shoulders.

The snake wrapped itself around Mulyo in a flash and suffocated him.

Dumbest criminal of the  week in Santa Cruz, CA:

A man  who brought his cell phone  with him  and was downloading images of children while the police interviewed him.
Santa Cruz Police were talking to a 48-year-old man suspected of dealing in child pornography this Wednesday. While talking, they found  that the man was downloading illegal images of children on his phone at the police station.Walter Louis Galvert III, of Boulder Creek was arrested for possession of child pornography Wednesday.

 Police found images of children at Galvert’s home at the 13000 block of Highway 9. He had previously been in the adult pornography business, they said.

Dumbest criminal of the week was doing the act as the police interviewed him:

In searching his cell phones brought to the interview, investigators found he was actively in possession and actually downloading child pornography at that very moment,” wrote Deputy Chief Steve Clark, in a press release.

Welcome to the 5th century! Islam rejects DNA as evidence in rape cases. So says the Council of Islamic Ideology. Why? Because there is no mention of DNA in the Islamic bible – the Koran.

“Why did they not produce for it four witnesses? And when they do not produce the witnesses, then it is they, in the sight of Allah , who are the liars.” — Qur’an 24:13

The Council of Islamic Ideology rejects DNA testing as primary evidence because it isn’t mentioned in the Qur’an. The Qur’an mandates that four witnesses are required to establish sexual crimes – zina — and that’s that.

In a meeting of the council on Wednesday, religious scholars observed that while the tool could aid investigation into rape complaints, it could not be taken as evidence. It could, at best, serve as supplementary evidence but could not supersede the Islamic laws laid out for determining rape complaints.

“It cannot be treated as main evidence but it certainly is a great help in investigations,” said Allama Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi, a member of CII present at the meeting chaired by Senator Maulana Muhammad Khan Sherani. The Quranic provisions calling for four witnesses would still be required as evidence in such cases, the scholars maintained.

The observation was made in response to queries sent to the council by different courts regarding the status of DNA tests as evidence in rape case. The standard police practice has been to register rape cases only after obtaining DNA test results and presenting the report before the court as the main evidence.

“Newport shopkeeper told to remove ‘obey our laws’ T-shirt,” from the South Wales Argus, May 29 (thanks to Benedict):

A NEWPORT shopkeeper has been forced by police to remove a T-shirt from his shop window because they felt it “could be seen to be inciting racial hatred.”

Matthew Taylor, 35, the owner of Taylor’s clothes store on Emlyn Walk in the city, printed up and displayed the T-shirt with the slogan: “Obey our laws, respect our beliefs or get out of our country” after Drummer Lee Rigby, 25, was killed in near Woolwich barracks in London last week.

But following a complaint from a member of the public, police came to his store and threatened to arrest him unless he removed the Tshirt from sight.

Firenze Sage: Ah, book her Danno? [handcuffed for remarks]

 

An 85-year-old woman arrested outside Gillingham Mosque  after allegedly hurling abuse at Muslims has been charged with a racially aggravated public order offence.  The arresting officer was Muslim.

The woman shouted ‘Go back to your own country!‘ as  Muslims left religious services.

The pensioner, from Chatham, was handcuffed and taken away in a van by officers after trouble flared as worshippers left Friday prayers.

She was held by officers outside the Canterbury Street mosque as Kent Police vowed to take a hard line against reprisal attacks following the terrorist murder of a soldier.
