firenze sage: carnivores 1, vegans nil [Animal Rights protest of Antler restaurant]

Antler Kitchen & Bar restaurant  in Ontario, Canada protested by animal rights group results in an increase in  reservations

Owner of  Toronto, Canada’s meat restaurant Antler Kitchen & Bar  turns animal rights protest into free advertising for his restaurant.  And,  reservations are up at Antler.

A Toronto based site called blogTO reported:

Toronto restaurant shocks vegans protesting meat

Animal rights activists were horrified this weekend when the co-owner of a Dundas West restaurant they’d been protesting for weeks staged what appeared to be a counter-protest of his own.

The restaurant in question, Antler, is known for serving “local seasonal and wild foods” that are native to Canada, such as bison, boar, rabbit, duck and deer.

They also serve foie gras, which has long been condemned as especially cruel in terms of animal welfare.

A group of local activists had arranged a protest in front of the restaurant on Friday evening, writing on Facebook that it would be their fourth of such protests outside Antler…

About an hour into their demonstration, protesters say that the restaurant’s co-owner and chef, Michael Hunter, “brought out an entire animal leg and started cutting it up right in the window on a table reserved for diners.”

Event organizer Marni Jill Ugar wrote later that night on Facebook that she felt Hunter had been “taunting” the group by cutting up a deer leg right in front of them.

“Once the deer was cooked Michael Hunter, owner of Antler, sat back down at the window to eat the dead deer,” she wrote.

A review of the restaurant claims that the Ricotta Cavatelli with Wild Boar is  surprisingly  delicious.

Move the booze & cut 24/7 Safeway hours of operation at Safeway in Aptos, Felton & Santa Cruz? One way to reduce crime….

The highest crime in Santa Cruz County — from Felton to Aptos — occurs near the three Safeway stores that are open 24 hours 7 days a week.

What to do? Change Safeway hours of operation to 6 AM – midnight. Safeway in Redding CA reduced hours and saw crime go down.  Most crimes occur after midnight at the Redding Safeway store.

And move the booze back near the milk and eggs.  That will reduce petty theft of alcohol.  Make it as time consuming to get alcohol as getting  milk and eggs.

The Safeway store in Aptos, CA places alcohol front and center near the entrance to the Safeway store.  Talk to the managers. Ask Safeway to   move the alcohol to the back wall across from the milk.

Aptos Psychologist:  The local paper is filled with simple  ways how to eat more vegetables at breakfast.  How about simple ways to reduce crime  — like move the booze to the far  end of the Safeway store in Aptos?  Close Safeway stores after midnight?

sensible immigration reform? no human illegal? require E-Verify, require biometric entry-exit system…Goodlatte-McCaul proposal

No human is illegal?

Concerning legal immigration, two thirds of Americans want less than half the actual number of immigrants coming in.

About 100 K come in and most Americans want fewer than 500,000.  Roughly 9-10% of Americans want zero immigration.

Immigration was the issue that put Trump on the radar screen.  And immigration –   both legal and illegal  –  will be a crucial issue in the 2018 mid-elections.

So what’s a “sensible” immigration policy look like? How will both legal and illegal immigration be dealt with?

Take a look at the link below:

http://thehill.com/opinion/immigration/370736-goodlatte-mccaul-proposal-is-a-viable-path-for-sensible-immigration

Aptos Psychologist:

Congress must substantially  increase  funds to HHS to manage and  control both legal and illegal immigration.  Perhaps its time to do your part and speak up?

We need  more Border Patrol (10 K recommended)  to stop illegals from entering.  For example,  from just one central american country alone roughly 1 in 3 persons from El Salvador now reside in the USA.

We need more  immigration  judges to quickly provide equal, fair justice and to handle  the 600,000 cases still pending     At the given rate of cases it could take 15-20 years to handle the  600,000 case backlog unless the system  changes.

Education:  It’s time for the public to educate itself as to the pros and cons of  what a sensible immigration policy looks like.

What say you? ; Comments welcome!  written by  drcameronjackson@gmail.com

firenze sage–free quiet vacation in Syria or Yemen? [most safe country for Muslim women and children is?]

safety of Muslim  women — where most safe?

The most safe county for Muslim women and girls? The USA says one American professor.

An Ohio music professor who said Muslim women and girls are safer in the U.S. than in any Middle Eastern country has been forced to retire.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports University of Cincinnati assistant professor Clifford Adams has been placed on administrative [leave] for the remainder of the semester and will retire May 1.

He made the comment online to a Muslim student who had criticized Donald Trump’s presidency and spoke about freedom and diversity. Adams wrote “how dare” she complain.

Adams didn’t respond immediately Friday to a request for comment. He earlier wrote a letter to The Enquirer saying he was “deeply sorry” and was trying to have a “lively, provocative, scholarly argument.” School spokesman Greg Vehr says the university is “committed to excellence and diversity.”

You must pay union fees to get & keep a govt job? Your money supports political views you disagree with. That’s question Supreme Court will answer

You must pay union fees to get & keep a govt job? Your money  spent to  support political views you  fundamentally disagree with? That’s wrong.  This violates your freedom of speech rights.

For example, the SEIU  supported Obama in 2008 & 2012   and supported Hillary Clinton in 2016.   The SEIU pours millions of dollars into the Democrat Party each election cycle.   Why should  union dues you must  pay to keep your job be spent  for  politics you disagree with?

The Supreme Court hears a case on this issue starting Monday, February 26.  This is from the Wall Street Journal:

“Across the U.S., more than 500,000 state and local workers have objected to funding union advocacy but are nonetheless required by law to pay “fair share” fees to labor unions they have refused to join. The Supreme Court upheld the practice in a 1977 case, Abood v. Detroit Board of Education, reasoning that otherwise workers could “free ride” on the union’s collective bargaining. Prohibiting unions from charging nonmembers directly for political speech, it believed, would protect their First Amendment rights.

“On Monday the justices will hear oral arguments in a challenge to that 1977 decision brought by Mr. Janus. They should heed Justice Felix Frankfurter’s observation, in an earlier case on mandatory union fees, that it is “rather naive” to assume “that economic and political concerns are separable.” As Mr. Janus argues, bargaining over wages, pensions and benefits in the public sector involves issues of intense public concern and thus core First Amendment-protected speech. A state law that forces public employees to fund that speech violates their rights, no less than compelling them to speak. ( Janus v. Afscme doesn’t consider these questions for unions in the private sector.)

“Other unions that held pro-Clinton rallies include the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association and the Service Employees International Union, which represents about one million public workers. The SEIU convention passed a resolution that the union will “elect Hillary Clinton” as president “by mobilizing millions of voters.” Unions and state governments maintain that nonmembers can be charged for these conventions because they are where the unions adopt bargaining strategies and representational policies.

asylum seekers from Central America flee “gang violence” says CA attorney John Allured

seeking  asylum

An advocate for persons  seeking asylum  from Central America,    attorney John W. Allured (CA bar license #84770) spoke on Immigration and the Law   at Christ Lutheran Church  in Aptos, CA on Sunday, February 11, 2018.

Attorney Allured  was introduced by Pastor Dale Sollom-Brotherton.  See information on the church website about the speaker.

Mr. Allured is a member of First  Lutheran church in Palo Alto, CA.

Christ Lutheran Church in Aptos, CA supports  the AMMPARO program.  The church  currently provides  housing and other  support for a   family  from El Salvador.  The church  may assist  persons seeking refugee status via  advocacy in the legal process  as Guardian Angels.

AMMPARO was envisioned to accompany children today and in the future who are forced to flee their communities because of complex and interrelated reasons, including chronic violence, poverty, environmental displacement and lack of opportunities in El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala.

Some of  attorney  John Allured’s  remarks and some questions that were asked:

“Most  persons seeking asylum from the Triangle countries  (San Salvador, Guatamala &  Honduras) seek asylum due to “gang violence”.

“The rate of  those seeking asylum  from  Mexico has gone down and the rate from Central America has gone up.

Asylum seekers must show “credible fear”.   What is that?

“Migrants do not have right to legal representation.

If “credible fear” is found the case moves forward to “removal status”, the juvenille is then  “placed” and the case goes before a judge.

“In 2016, 50% of mothers with children lacked counsel;  of these, 90% were removed.

“The chances of defeating removal increased 5 times when migrant had counsel. So says Attorney Allured.

“How does ‘gang violence” fit into all this?  If only “gang violence” you have to do your homework to establish that your case fits within one of five categories.

“Asylum is discretionary.  You  must show “good character” via employment, church membership, credible witnesses and that you are a deserving  person.

There are two Hearings –  The first one which is on  the Master Calendar  is open to the public.

Asylum applicants  have no “right” to due process.  San Francisco judges (the one he observed) bend over backwards so applicants can establish their case.  In San Francisco (his experience),c ases are typically continued 5-6 times before moving on to”removal” status.  Which judge  hears the case — in what part of the US — matters significantly.

Church congregations can serve as “guardian angels”. There’s nothing to fear.  It’s an informal process. Judges do not wear robes.  The federal rules of evidence serve as a guide.

Questions asked during and after Mr. Allured’s  presentation at Christ Lutheran church in Aptos, CA   included:

  •  What about economics?  If a woman’s kids are starving is that a reason to establish asylum? Answer:  No.  You have to establish more than economic hardship.  You have to show harm, that you were threatened, a family member killed.
  •  What about domestic violence?  Terrorizing woman is very frightening one attendee asked.  Answer: There are avenues for women …
  •  A man who lived 15 years in the Netherlands asked, Where do most persons seeking asylum here  come from?  Answer:  Attorney Allurd  said that he did not know.  [There are 9 federal resettlement contractors one of the largest is the Lutheran church.]   The man  then asked a followup question, What would likely happen to those  seeking asylum in Mexico?  Mr. Allurd replied that he  did not know.   [Currently there is a backlog at the Mexico-US border.]
  • There are   reports that  persons who enter  illegally   do not show up for their first court appearance.  Know anything about that?  Attorney Allurd  replied  that he did not know about no shows for court appearances. [One report states that 135,000 go missing and do not show up.]

After the presentation persons attending were encouraged to meet each other.

Information concerning various resources was available including  Tell Me How it Ends, an essay in Forty Questions by Laleria Luiselli.

Aptos Psychologist:    “I was a stranger and you offered me welcome …  “   That’s the message of Christ Lutheran Church in Aptos, CA

Take Away message:   Per this presentation,  you better get an attorney  if you are from Central America  seeking asylum.  Persons seeking asylum in the U.S.  have no legal right to representation.

Concerning gang violence,  Monterey County (Salinas, CA  is the county seat) is ranked as  the youth homicide capital of California for four out of the past five years.  Gang violence is continually in the news. California has its own gang related problems.

People are not fleeing California for Central America because of ‘gang violence’.  That there is economic opportunity, freedom and rule by law here in the U.S. draws people  here.  Legally and illegally.  People who come need to follow the  U.S.A. immigration laws that are in place.

Salvadorans living in the U.S. are as American as apple pie? Learning English?

Are Salvadorans as American a apple pie? Have they assimilated? Learned English?

What’s the first thing to do when moving to a new country?  Learn the language? Yes.    So, how well have Salvadorans done — those who have moved to the U.S. –  in terms of learning English?

What do we know about Salvadorans living  here in the U.S.?  Roughly a third live in California, the majority in southern California with pockets in San Francisco, Oakland and other cities in northern CA.

Somewhat less than half  of Salvadorans (42%) have lived in the U.S. for more than 20  years.

Salvadorans are slow to learn English.  Two-thirds of Salvadorans living in the U.S. are “Spanish dominant”.  About a half are considered  ‘proficient’ in English. Only 3% are “English dominant”.

Salvadorans do not self-identify as “American”.  Only 12% of Salvadorans living in the U.S. identify as “American”.  In comparison, about  a quarter of all Hispanics  – which includes Salvadorans – (23%) self-identify as “American”.

Salvadorans get jobs at about the same rate as native born Americans.  And they marry at about the same rate.  They do have more out of wedlock children  — 44% of women age 15 to 44 who had a child in the last 12 months was born out of wedlock.

Roughly 60% of  immigrants from Central America are in the U.S. illegally and roughly 50%  are on some form of welfare.

Salvadorans living in the U.S.  are considerably less educated.  Only 8% of those age 25+ have a college education compared to 30 percent of native born Americans.  The ‘good news’ is that Salvadorans born in the U.S. achieve a 22% rate of college education.

comment by Aptos Psychologist Cameron Jackson:

Will all the thousands of Salvadorans actually be deported?  Commit a crime, get deported seems to be the current rule.

how not to buy property: Trump’s son-in-law buys 666 Fifth Avenue in New York …. Ten years later, big trouble

How not to buy property: Trump’s son-in-law bought 666 Fifth Avenue

How not do buy property:   Trump’s son-in-law’s firm owns property that cannot pay for itself.   In 2006, at the height of the real-estate bubble, Kushner’s real-estate firm made an audacious purchase of 666 Fifth Avenue—prime Manhattan property. But just over 10 years later, that deal has reportedly crippled the company and has raised significant questions about Kushner himself.

An in-depth article by Bloomberg News in August gave a dour view of the purchase:

It was 2006—the height of the real-estate market boom—when Kushner Cos. agreed to buy 666 Fifth Avenue for $1.8 billion, then a record for a Manhattan building. All of it was borrowed except for $50 million. The company still holds half of a $1.2 billion mortgage, on which it hasn’t paid a cent. The full amount is due in February 2019.

Firenze Sage: it’s what you think you know and don’t … [federal tax plan]

tax plan
What do you think of the tax plan?

What do you think about the  tax plan that passed recently? Depends on your views of the messenger.  Excuse for the rich?  Allows you to keep more of your money?

Satirist Ami Horowitz  went to New York City’s West Village to ask Liberals if they approved of the GOP tax plan disguised as having been proposed by Bernie Sanders.

Reading out the plan and describing it as  the  the Republican’s plan,  the interviewees at first  described the GOP’s plan as “ridiculous” and “an excuse for the rich people to get a break on having to pay taxes.

Continuing to read the same plan and describing it as   the “Bernie Sanders” plan,  then they were in support.

One woman responded, “It’s all just rational with Bernie. With Trump it’s not.”

Horowitz finally revealed that he had been reading out the GOP tax plan all along and the surprised interviewees said they would be more open to supporting it and doing their research.

Back to school for older students over 24 & lots of options!

Older students go back to school and lots of options are out there for them

Maybe that 20 year old son, daughter or young relative  does better to get a  full job and go back with some  work experience under their belt?  Probably true for many.

What’s happening:   According to the Wall Street Journal, it’s back to college for  many older students over 24 and there’s  lots of options!   Lots of choices are out there!    Roughly 40% of the  18 million students enrolled  in 2 and 4 year colleges were over the age of 24 this spring.  Many  of these older students work full time, have families and are looking for flexible courses with online components.

And there are lots of options for older students.  Colorado State University-Global, launched in 2008, now has 19,000 students.

Purdue University bought for-profit Kaplan University which will add about 30,000 students to Purdue’s base.

Western Governors  University — an online university based in Utah — and Arizona State University as well as many tiny liberal arts colleges are scrambling to enroll students outside the 18-24 range.

Comment by Aptos Psychologist:   Whereas Obama’s policies were to close down and put out of business many “for profit” colleges –  under Trump universities’ policies are  changing for the good.  There’s many more options out there for older students over the age of 24. Education coupled with  work experience is the way to go for more and more students.
