Aptos Psychologist: How to teach that each child IS special through Christian Saints

Each child IS special & needs to know why. Tell the stories of the Catholic Saints.
Jesus born of Mary

Yes, all children are special.  And each child needs  to hear why they are special.

Imagine: A mom has four children.  Different ages and different dads for some. Mom loves all of them.

Two children were  born in February on the same day.  One is a girl and the other a boy and they are  different ages. They share the same birth date.    Another child, the youngest, was  born just before Christmas. And one is a Feb. child.

Each child wants to be special  — and loved in a special way.

But moms know that each child IS special and loved in a special way. And each child needs to know why each IS special.

How to convey to each that each child IS special and loved in a special way?  Tell the children the stories of the Christian  Saints.

The youngest  child born just before Christmas is a Christ-child.  And  thus,  tell that child and all four  children,  the story of Jesus born of Mary and Joseph in the town of Bethlehem after traveling a long way with Mary on a donkey.

It was not easy for Mary. Mary was a teenager around age 15 living in a small village.  Everybody in the village could see that Mary was pregnant and that  she was not married when she got pregnant.  And think of Joseph.  Instead of sending Mary back to her family as she was pregnant, Joseph listened to the angels.  And so Joseph put Mary on a donkey and headed out into the darkness to go to a small town far, far away.  Joseph trusted what the angels told him to do.

Tell all the children about the Three   Wise Men  who came bringing gifts for Jesus.  And tell the children  that’s why we give gifts to each other on Christ-Mass Day. And share gifts with the children.  Especially if you cannot be there on Christmas.  Do it early so they know you care.

The two born in February have a special Saint.  Tell the February children about Saint Valentine who is remembered on February 14.  There are several Saint Valentines. Today we give Valentines to those we love.  There is a Saint Valentine church in Rome, Italy  that the children can visit. Tell the children born in Feb. close to Valentine’s Day that they are children of Love who are to Grow to Love others.  Tell them their special saint is Saint Valentine.  And that’s one reason why they are special.  And make a Valentine for each of the children — red paper, saying the words only a mom can say about love for that special Valentine child.

This particular mom also has a child who has a birthday around the middle of Sept.   Check out the Saints for that day. For example, Sept. 21 is about Saint Mathew.

And Sept 14 is about the power of the Cross. Perhaps giving that Special Child born on Sept. 14 a small cross  might be one way to show how that child is special – to mom and to Jesus. The symbol of the cross has long been a symbol of Jesus and God’s Love for all of us.

Learn about the Saints of old that pertain to specific days. And learn about those Saints that can help us NOW in our day!   And remember that we are all Saints Becoming.

Saints are not perfect. Saints are those who follow Jesus born of Mary.  Mary listened to the angels and believed God’s promises.   So those four children can also choose to be Saints for today.  With guidance from their mom as she seeks to know Jesus.

For each child give them a special gift by connecting them to Saints of Old so that the children of  today become Saints of today.  This is one way to teach that each child IS special to mom and to Jesus, Son of Mary and Joseph.

At least three different Saint Valentines, all of them martyrs, are mentioned in the early martyrologies under date of 14 February. One is described as a priest at Rome, another as bishop of Interamna (modern Terni), and these two seem both to have suffered in the second half of the third century and to have been buried on the Flaminian Way, but at different distances from the city. In William of Malmesbury’s time what was known to the ancients as the Flaminian Gate of Rome and is now the Porta del Popolo, was called the Gate of St. Valentine. The name seems to have been taken from a small church dedicated to the saint which was in the immediate neighborhood. Of both these St. Valentines some sort of Acta are preserved but they are of relatively late date and of no historical value. Of the third Saint Valentine, who suffered in Africa with a number of companions, nothing further is known.

Saint Valentine’s Day

The popular customs associated with Saint Valentine’s Day undoubtedly had their origin in a conventional belief generally received in England and France during the Middle Ages, that on 14 February, i.e. half way through the second month of the year, the birds began to pair. Thus in Chaucer’s Parliament of Foules we read:

For this was sent on Seynt Valentyne’s day
Whan every foul cometh ther to choose his mate.

For this reason the day was looked upon as specially consecrated to lovers and as a proper occasion for writing love letters and sending lovers’ tokens. Both the French and English literatures of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries contain allusions to the practice. Perhaps the earliest to be found is in the 34th and 35th Ballades of the bilingual poet, John Gower, written in French; but Lydgate and Clauvowe supply other examples. Those who chose each other under these circumstances seem to have been called by each other their Valentines. In the Paston Letters, Dame Elizabeth Brews writes thus about a match she hopes to make for her daughter (we modernize the spelling), addressing the favoured suitor:

Aptos Psychologist: Obama, Islamic extremists & religious freedom

Fort Hood Islamic jehad murders called ‘work place injury’ by Obama

Obama waves a magic wand and there’s no home grown terrorism, there’s no need to work for welfare, it’s fine to have a mosque at Ground Zero and the massacre at Ford Hood was just a ‘work place related injury’?

Really?  Scream in Arabic  that Allah is Great and murder  people and the public can be hood winked that  its just a work place injury? Just because Obama says so — does not make it so.

There is no home grown terror —  because Obama says so!  That  is Obama’s position on the massacre at Fort Hood.

And yes,  we must have a mosque at Ground Zero but Catholics cannot practice their religious beliefs. Why? Because Obama says so.

General Motors is alive  — and Bin Laden is dead.  Also dead  is our U.S. Ambassador Stevens to Libya.

What is Obama’s foreign policy?  America is to blame for whatever. The US must apologize for whatever. Per Obama, the US must lead from behind with the UN must take  leadership.

Think how Obama’s actions towards religious freedom   are connected to his foreign policies:

Remember the Mosque at Ground Zero supported by President Obama. What were Obama’s words?   We must support a mosque because this nation protects religious freedom said President Obama.  Does Obama know any  Islamic history?   Historically, when Islam claimed military  territory the first thing they did  was  put a mosque there.

A mosque at Ground Zero is one  way to spread jihad – the holy war – and show who has won.  A mosque at Ground Zero shows religious dominance not religious freedom.

Remember Obama riding rough shod over the Catholic bishops who provide substantial charity in America and world wide  based on Catholic teachings?  The ObamaCare regulation written by HHS Sibelius  requires all charities including Catholic to provide all forms of contraceptives to women  –  including sterilization, abortion and contraceptives.

When the Republicans held a hearing whether the ObamaCare regulation violated freedom of religion,  Nancy Pelosi held her own separate news conference and  brought out Sandra Fluke who said she and graduate students like her  should have free contraceptives paid for by the government.

Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats shifted  a discussion of protection of religious freedom for Catholics and other religions into into a War on Women waged  by the Republicans who  according to Pelosi  want to take away contraceptives from women.

Remember Fort Hood and that crazy MD who gunned all those people down shouting praise of Allah while he did so?  Now we learn that per Obama’s policies,  it  was a ‘workplace related injury’ not an act of terror. So no Occupational Therapy or therapy for those injured by that crazy Islamic extremist MD.

No one getting welfare has to work any more  Why? Because Obama says so!  So what that Democrat President Clinton signed a law requiring work as part of receiving welfare. No matter that the welfare rolls were cut in half and people reported that they felt better about themselves.

Maybe it is time for Americans to say no more of Obama’s policies. No more   waving a  magic,  pro-Islam wand and implementing policies that weaken freedoms abroad and here at home.

For two weeks, Obama blamed an  anti-Islam video made by an American  as the cause of Am. Stevens’ death. From Obama’s viewpoint, it had to be some act of stupidity by an American and not more jehad, not more Islamic extremists making  a holy war against America and Western values. The New York Times reported that the man responsible for murdering Am. Stevens is bragging about it while  sipping mango juice.

Then in the last debate,  Obama gets on TV and walks back the narrative. Now  he called Am. Stevens death an act of terrorism from day one.  Obama just waved his magic wand and he  makes it so! Supposedly.

Let’s hope Romney on Monday  asks some pointed questions:

Sir,  Mr. President, who in the White House  read the cables coming in from Am. Stevens saying he was in danger and security not sufficient?

When Ms. Lamb testified that “the assets were sufficient” did she know that the one plane there had been removed and two groups of security had been removed?  Did Ms. Lamb know there were 200 acts of terrorism the last year and that the Am. from Great Britain was attacked and that the Red Cross had withdrawn?

And Sir, exactly now many of the daily security briefings did you attend this last 3 months?  And why did you attend less than half?  Just too busy trying to get re-elected?

Sir, why did 6-7 days pass and a news agency picks up Am. Stevens diary and only then did the public learn that Am. Stevens thought his life was threatened and security lax?

Why no marines sent in based an hour or so away?  Yes or no Mr. President –  before you flew to Las Vegas, did you call a meeting of the agencies in charge of security and State Department? And why not?

There are a lot of foreign and domestic policy questions that need to be asked and answered.

Why a TRILLION dollar deficit each of the last four years?

Why NO immigration reform during the first two years when the Democrats held  the Senate and House and could pass any bill they wanted?

Why do you support importing Brazilian oil yet kill the pipeline from Canada which means jobs for Americans and oil for Americans instead of oil for China?

Why Mr. President do Democrats like Gore increase their wealth from 2 to 100 million after making investments in green corporations that you subsidized and subsequently went belly up?

Let’s hope that the American public asks for answers to these and other questions. And no more waving of magic wands by Obama!

Firenze Sage: Islam & camel urine therapy in Egypt

CAMEL 225x300 Firenze Sage: Islam & camel urine therapy in Egypt On September 16, popular TV persona Wael El-Ibrashi hosted Dr. Zaghlul al-Naggar, a prominent Islamic thinker and Chairman of Egypt’s Committee of Scientific Notions in the Quran, on the topic of medical science and Islam.

Inevitably the idea of drinking camel urine as a form of therapy—first proposed in the 7th century by Muslim prophet Muhammad—came up.

Not only did Dr. Naggar promote this practice, but he made the staggering announcement that right now in Egypt a medical center in Marsa Matrouh actually specializes in treating people with camel urine, all in accord with the prophet’s advice.

Drinking water illegal during Ramadam

No leniency for Islamic  non-believer drinking water in public in Kuwait.  Law against drinking water in public  during Ramadam   is enforced in Kuwait.

DUBAI: It is illegal to drink or eat in public in Kuwait during the holy month of Ramadan, where Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset.

Over the weekend, Kuwaiti police said they made the first arrest of someone who failed to abide by their strict conditions during the holy month.

Police have indicated that a police patrol saw an “Asian drinking water from a bottle during the day.”

Under Kuwait law, anyone caught drinking or eating in public during fasting times is detained and held until after the Eid holiday that marks the end of Ramadan.

Firenze Sage: Saudi female track star [must comply with sharia law]

Sarah Attar track star must comply with sharia law

Muslim Spring  turns  to   winter for women’s rights in Saudi Arabia.  Saudi Arabia agreed Thursday to send two women to compete in the 2012 Olympic games. With strings attached.

The move by the ultra-conservative Muslim kingdom comes after Saudi sports leaders declared that the women of Saudi sports must respect the kingdom’s rules.

Female competitors must dress modestly, be accompanied by a male guardian and not mix with men, Prince Nawaf bin Faisal told the paper Al-Jazirah.

They must also wear “suitable clothing that complies with sharia” (Islamic law), he said.

The two female Saudi athletes are Wodjan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shahrkhani in judo and 800-meter runner Sarah Attar.

Firenze Sage: Frogs praise Allah! [Egypt’s first fatwa after Muslim Brotherhood’s victory]

Fatwa against eating frogs including the northern leopard frog

Muslim Brotherhood’s Muhammad Morsi just won the presidency in Egypt.

The first legal action taken, the  very first fatwa to appear by Egypt’s highest fatwa council,  addresses—not social, political, or economic issues in Egypt—but rather frogs.

Specifically, the fatwa  bans Muslims from hunting and killing frogs to sell to those nations that dine on the amphibians.
As the fatwa explains, according to Islam’s prophet Muhammad as recorded in a hadith, a frog’s “croaking is praise [to Allah].”
Accordingly, “a number of jurists [fuqaha] have relied on this [hadith] to forbid the eating of frogs, under the notion that ‘that which is banned from being killed, is forbidden from being eaten.’”

do you see a Christian cross when you cut a tomato in half?

Tomatoes praise the Christian cross instead of Allah and tomatoes affirm Allah is three persons not one?

So says says the Salafist group called the Popular Egyptian Islamic Association. This group has come under fire after sending out a warning on Facebook urging its followers not to eat tomatoes because the vegetable (or fruit) is a Christian food.

The group posted a photo on its page of a tomato – which appears to reveal the shape of a cross after being cut in half – along with the message: “Eating tomatoes is forbidden because they are Christian. [The tomato] praises the cross instead of Allah and says that Allah is three” (a reference to the Trinity).

[God help us]. I implore you to spread this photo because there is a sister from Palestine who saw the prophet of Allah [Mohammad] in a vision. Mohammad was crying, warning his nation against eating them [tomatoes]. If you don’t spread this [message], know that it is the devil who stopped you.”

jehad against immunization teams because drops are poison

Threat of jehad against vacination teams because polio drops are “poison”.

A cleric in Pakistan’s Punjab province has warned that a jihad would be launched against polio vaccination teams at a time when the World Health Organisation has expressed concern at the emergence of new cases of the disease across the country.

Maulvi Ibrahim Chisti of Muzaffargarh district declared the anti-polio campaign as “un-Islamic” and announced at the local mosque that jihad (holy war) should be carried out against the polio vaccination team. He made the remarks after finding out that a vaccination team had entered Khan Pur Bagga Sher area of Muzaffargarh and asked families to cooperate with the campaign.

The cleric went to the largest mosque in the area and declared that polio drops were “poison” and against Islam, The Express Tribune reported. He warned that if the vaccination team forced anyone to participate in the campaign, then jihad was “the only option”.

Aptos Psychologist: individual conscience and service (Romney) or a proletarian struggle (Obama)

Obama's proletarian struggle

Individual conscience and service or a proletarian struggle?

personal conscience of each individual

What makes the individual matter?

For Obama it is the collective force that individuals can exert through mass action such as the Occupy Wall Street movement. Not the individual but the collectivity of individuals subsumed to some greater goal that causes important change according to Obama. Life is a proletarian struggle.

For Romney, “the call of service is one of the fundamental elements of our national character. It has motivated every great movement of conscience that this hopeful, fair-minded country of ours has ever seen.”

Recently, Gov. Romney told graduates of Liberty College that “the great drama is always personal, individual, unfolding in one’s own life… and that Men and women of every faith — and good people with none at all — sincerely strive to do right and lead a purpose-driven life.”

Life is politics says Obama. Obama tells college graduates at Banard College that the road ahead is a fairly grim proletarian struggle and that they need to be ready to occupy everything. Mass political action is the way to make significant change says Obama.

The contrasting world views of Romney and Obama as to how change occurs through individual actions could not be starker.

What say you as to why individuals matter?

DrCameronJackson@gmail.com

See Opinion piece in WSJ A Tale of Two Commencements below

“Two days after Mitt Romney delivered the commencement speech at Liberty University, the big evangelical Christian school founded by Jerry Falwell, Barack Obama tutored graduates at Barnard College, the intensely liberal all-women’s school adjacent to Columbia University. As you might guess, the wisdom these two political elders imparted to the Class of 2012 was not the same.

Of course the first purpose for both men was to turn young graduates into believers. Mr. Romney, a Mormon, needs to win over ambivalent evangelical voters. Mr. Obama, a liberal Democrat, expects to have the 22-year-old college graduate vote locked up—if they vote.

Yes, of course, they pandered.

Barack Obama, by now a master at faux self-deflation, admitted he was pandering: “Now I recognize that’s a cheap applause line when you’re giving a commencement at Barnard.” (Laughter.) He had said the women of this generation will help lead the way. (Applause.)

Mitt Romney solved his more problematic pandering assignment by piling praise onto the university’s late founder, the Rev. Jerry Falwell—”a cheerful, confident champion for Christ.”

But even amid pandering one may find truths about candidates revealed, and so it was in New York City and Lynchburg, Va.

The world that Barack Obama conveyed to the women at Barnard is totally, overwhelmingly political. To be sure, there were references to parental joy at the success of children completing college, but virtually every thought in the Obama commencement address—on the accomplishments of the past or a graduate’s goals—was defined by political activity.

He said they are about to grapple with unique challenges, “like whether you’ll be able to earn equal pay for equal work” or “fully control decisions about your own health.”

The role of the citizen in “our democracy” began 225 years ago at the Convention in Philadelphia, which had “flaws,” to wit: “Questions of race and gender were unresolved.” Nonetheless, it “allowed for protest and movements.”

And so: “Don’t accept somebody else’s construction of the way things ought to be. It’s up to you to right wrongs. It’s up to you to point out injustice. It’s up to you to hold the system accountable and sometimes upend it entirely. It’s up to you to stand up and to be heard, to write and to lobby, to march, to organize, to vote.”

Mr. Obama described his own early job as a community organizer: “I wanted to do my part to shape a better world.” He cited the accomplishments of previous generations of young people who “stood up and sat in from Seneca Falls to Selma to Stonewall.” This, Mr. Obama said, is how “we achieved” women’s rights, voting rights, workers’ rights and gay rights.

Barack Obama seems to inhabit a world of history and personal experience in which good people at every turn are held back by individuals or oppressive forces that one only overcomes by personal or public resistance.

Someone in high school told Labor Secretary Hilda Solis she wasn’t college material. Mr. Obama’s grandmother worked for a bank but hit the glass ceiling. And today there are “those who oppose change, those who benefit from an unjust status quo [and] have always bet on the public’s cynicism or the public’s complacency.” He predicts they will lose “this time as well.”

The president giving remarks at Barnard College, May 14

Fair enough. That’s how the world works for Barack Obama, though it strikes me he is telling America’s 22-year-olds that the road ahead is a fairly grim proletarian struggle. Be ready to occupy everything. Where’s the joy in that?

There was less tooth and claw in the Romney speech at Liberty University. In a discussion of the uses of religious freedom, one passage in particular separated Mr. Romney from Barack Obama’s default to mass action. “The great drama of Christianity,” Gov. Romney said, “is not a crowd shot, following the movements of collectives or even nations. The drama is always personal, individual, unfolding in one’s own life.” Out of this, he said, “Men and women of every faith, and good people with none at all, sincerely strive to do right and lead a purpose-driven life.”

Progress, he argued, emerges through “conscience in action,” for him “the nation’s greatest force for good.” Mr. Romney referred several times to the idea of personal service. “The call to service,” he said “is one of the fundamental elements of our national character. It has motivated every great movement of conscience that this hopeful, fair-minded country of ours has ever seen.”

For Barack Obama, life is politics. For Mitt Romney, life includes politics; politics, he said, does not define us.

To wage a presidential campaign in our nonstop media age, the man who sees politics as a battering ram may have an edge. But Mitt Romney, with his politics of optimism and personal conscience, could be onto something that will serve him well.
