Obama shuffled cards  while Osama burned

Obama shuffled cards  while Osama was caught, killed and  burned.  Reggie Love says he and President Obama played cards during the Osama bin Laden raid.  The the president told Love, “I can’t watch this entire thing.”

What Reggie Love said at a public event:  “Most people were like down in the Situation Room and [President Obama] was like, ‘I’m not going to be down there, I can’t watch this entire thing,’ We must have played 15 games of spades,”

Love was Obama’s “body man,”. As his body man, Love  spent much time with his boss while he worked for Obama at the White House. Love has since been replaced by another “body man”   named Marvin.  Love, Marvin and a White House photographer played played cards for hours while the night bin Laddin was caught, killed and burned.

Monterey Bay Forum moves to WP Engine

Monterey Bay Forum  moves    to WP Engine.

New authors to join Monterey Bay Forum once the move is complete.

That  Monterey Bay Forum moves smoothly  from one host to another is thanks to considerable technical assistance from WP Engine and others.

After five years with Fat Cow —  thank you Fat Cow !  — it is time for Monterey Bay Forum www.freedomOK.net to move on.

WP Engine is chock full of persons steeped in Word Press.

Since Monterey Bay Forum uses Word Press exclusively it makes sense to go where we can get hassle free,  excellent technical assistance.  And when there are big spikes in traffic — hopefully no crashes!

Pesky internet hard to control says Kerry

INTERNET
Pesky internet hard to control says  Kerry

Pesky  internet hard to control says Kerry.

This little thing called the Internet … makes it much harder to govern.” said Secretary of State John Kerry.  He spoke  to State Department personnel at the U.S. Embasy in Brasilia, Brazil.

Ever since the end of the Cold War, forces have been unleashed that were tamped down for centuries by dictators. And,  that was complicated further by this little thing called the internet. And complicated by  the ability of people everywhere to communicate instantaneously and to have more information coming at them in one day than most people can process in months or a year….  It makes it much harder to govern … and that is complicated by a rise of sectarianism and religious extremism that is prepared to employ violent means to impose on other people a way of thinking and a way of living that is completely contrary to everything the United States of America has ever stood for.

The press according to Feinstein does not include unpaid bloggers

the press
the press according to Feinstein

The press according to Feinstein does not include bloggers and  unpaid, upstart media types. Like Firenze Sage, Esq. of the Monterey Bay Forum.

California Senator Dianne Feinstein has proposed an amendment to the Media Shield Law.

Feinstein wants to  limit the law’s protection to only  “real reporters,” not bloggers and other upstart alternative media types.

A real reporter, declared Madame Feinstein during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, is “a salaried agent” of a media company.  “salaried agents” are those who  work for  like the New York Times or ABC News.  Salaried agents does  not a shoestring operation with volunteers and writers who are not paid.

This is nothing new for Feinstein, who’s (along with Sen. Dick Durbin) previously made the argument that acts of journalism can only be performed by major news agencies, cutting everyone else out of the protective loop. This is a protective move based partially on ignorance and partially on the reality that major news networks are easier to control, seeing as most aren’t willing to give up access to the Beltway by pissing off its residents.

Sadly, this sort of reactionary ignorance isn’t limited solely to government representatives. This same sort of statement has been made by published authors to demean the self-published and by old school journalists to demean bloggers, serial Tweeters and pretty much everyone not associated with a sinking masthead. Whenever someone assumes they’re capable of determining who is or isn’t a real whatever, they’re usually speaking from a position of privilege, one that can only be maintained as long as the status remains quo.

The same goes for government officials arguing over the definition of “journalist.” It’s someone who performs the act of journalism. It’s as simple as that. But if you accept this definition, then you put the government at a greater “risk” of not being able to pursue and punish those who expose its wrongdoing. Feinstein makes this governmental fear explicit …

Peeping tom gets paid for peeping & a judge says it’s OK

Peeping tom photographer gets paid for peeping.  And a  judge says it’s OK.

Judge Eileen Rakower tossed a lawsuit brought by two parents against a peeping tom photographer.  The parents sued  a Tribeca artist who snapped pictures of their children through their apartment windows . The photographer did it as part of a controversial exhibition theme.

Artist Arne Svenson photographed his Greenwich Street neighbors for an exhibit titled “The Neighbors.”

Making use of their floor to ceiling windows, he captured his innocent subjects engaged in a host of mundane activities.  He filmed daily activities  including  cleaning the floor to playing with their kids.

But controversy erupted after Svenson’s models learned that they were being photographed without their knowledge.  And, that the images were being exhibited and sold for up to $10,000 each.

So, Matthew and Martha Foster sued Svenson — who likened himself to a “bird-watcher”

“The value of artistic expression outweighs any sale that stems from the published photos,” Judge Rakower wrote.

Sources said that photos from the exhibit have sold briskly, One buyer, the  Harvard Business School,  snapped up one shot of a woman in a green dress cleaning her floor.

Mohammed Churchill [baby name Britain]

CAMEL 222
camel or British cab? Mohammed or George for names?

Mohammed as a baby name grows in popularity in Britain.
Mohammed Churchill coming?

Mohammed reclaimed its place as the most popular name for baby boys born in England and Wales in 2011 – convincingly ahead of Harry, in second place, according to data released by the government this week.

The government declared that Harry was the most popular boy’s name, but if you add up the five most popular different spellings of Mohammed, that name comes top.

Mohammed is also the most popular boy’s name of the past five years for England and Wales, ahead of Oliver and Jack. It came first or second every year since 2007, the only name to do so.

And it could become even more popular in 2012, given the adulation around long-distance runner Mo Farah, who won two gold medals for Britain at the Olympics.

The popularity of the name comes as Britain’s Muslim population is expected to double in the next 20 years. jaj48@aol.com

RACISM IF WHITE
Unaware racism is what we all carry around says one law prof

jaj48@aol.com

We all carry around racial prejudice unaware …?

UC-Berkeley Law Professor Jonathan Simon reacted to the Zimmerman verdict.  He declared that the jury suffered from racial prejudice, even if they might not be aware of it:
This is what the law professor said:  “Imagine that Trayvon was a 17 year old female, a 54 year old white male, or even a 17 year old white male. In all of those cases the prosecutors would have had an easier job convincing the jury that Zimmerman acted recklessly in firing his gun…
In convincing the jury that George Zimmerman was reasonable in fearing for his life, the defense had a wind at its back that would not have been there had Trayvon been female or white.”

No mermaids allowed [in community pool]

MERMAID 3
NO MERMAIDS ALLOWED

jaj48@aol.com
No mermaids allowed wearing a silicon mermaid tail says leaders of a subdivision outside Tampa, Florida. A woman has been banned from swimming in her community’s pool because she wants to wear a blue, silicone mermaid tail.

Jenna Conti lives in a subdivision east of downtown Tampa, Florida. She has been in the community pool with her custom-made tail once before with the staff’s okay.

Conti, who calls herself Eden Sirene while in the water, has a custom-made silicon mermaid tail.

But last week, the community leaders told her it violated a policy against swim fins. On Monday night, the FishHawk Community Development board voted to keep her out of the pool because of the swim fin.

Traffic in Marin

Another day sitting in 101 traffic, another night reading the IJ full of complaints lacking constructive solutions.
solutions to traffic in Marin
solutions to traffic in Marin

Sure, we can sit around and hope the magical candy train from Sonoma will one day solve everything, but even a best case scenario is years away.  Roads and cars are here to stay and what we need are practical solutions that involve roads and cars.

Here’s one:  add metering lights to all those same freeway entrances that create the same backups every day.  It’s a simple fix that gets the cars on slower and works wonders (is there one in all of Marin?).  While we’re at it lets get the cars off faster at places like 3rd Street by fixing the lights and/or intersection there to keep the traffic from backing onto the freeway.  Cars that backed up isn’t just bad for traffic, it’s dangerous.  City lights and intersections are an easy fix that can be done by local leaders; no need to whine and wait for federal involvement.
Here’s another one open to a creative solution:  Find a way to charge a toll to all those transient commuters working in places like the Presidio (thanks George) but living in the East Bay.  Ever notice how the Richmond Bridge routes are jammed up in the evening but not in the morning?  No bridge tolls in that direction and better than taking city streets to the Bay Bridge.
Come on car people of Marin; let’s get some real car solutions.       JJ Jackson   Jackson.jj@gmail.com
