Firenze Sage: Another heretofore unknown investigation [IRS]

IRS targets conservative groups

IRS investigation of targeting conservatives  update:  In late March 2012, IRS deputy commissioner Steven Miller–who resigned his post as acting commissioner last week at President Obama’s request–directed senior technical advisor Nancy J. Marks to investigate allegations of political targeting of groups seeking tax exempt status, agency officials told congressional aides. Holly Paz, acting director of ruling and agreements, worked with Marks on the probe, and both traveled to Cincinnati to conduct interviews.

On May 3, 2012. Marks gave what IRS officials described as a “presentation” to Miller describing her findings. Marks said the investigation had found significant problems in the review process and a substantial bias against conservative group, Ahmad said.

No written findings were produced as a result, the aide said, and it does not appear the internal review led to any disciplinary actions against IRS employees.

Firenze Sage: the law is an ass, an idiot [parking tickets, torched cars]

More torched cars in Sweden get parking tickets

In Sweden  police don’t do anything to prevent cars from being torched by “youths”   Here’s  a hint, the “youths” aren’t named Erik or Gustav.  The parking regulations are strictly enforced.

So we have this absurd situation:

Early Wednesday, while documenting the destruction after a night of rioting in the Stockholm suburb of Alby, a reporter from Fria Tider observed a parking enforcement officer writing a ticket for a burnt-out Ford.

When questioned, the officer explained that the ticket was issued because the vehicle lacked a tag showing its time of arrival.

The fact that the vehicle had been effectively destroyed – its windshield smashed and the interior heavily damaged by fire – was irrelevant according to the meter maid, who asked Fria Tider’s photographer to destroy the photos he had taken.   more information

Pussy Riot Punk group

MOSCOW–A Russian court has denied parole to a member of the Pussy Riot punk group.

In its ruling Thursday, the court accepted a claim by prosecutors that Maria Alekhina had systematically disobeyed prison authorities and failed to repent for her crime, Russian media reported.

Alekhina went on a hunger strike Wednesday after being barred from the court hearing in Perm province, and she ordered her defense not to participate.

Band members Alekhina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, and Yekaterina Samutsevich gained worldwide notoriety last year when a Moscow court jailed them for two years for conducting a punk protest in Moscow’s main cathedral.   More Information

Firenze Sage: Midnight terror recon [Boston water supply]

Water supply for Boston

BELCHERTOWN (CBS) – Shortly after midnight Tuesday, seven people were caught trespassing at the Quabbin Reservoir.

State Police say the five men and two women are from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore, and “cited their education and career interests” for being in the area. The men told police they were chemical engineers and recent college graduates.

The Quabbin, in Belchertown, is one of the country’s largest man-made public water supplies. Boston’s drinking water comes from the Quabbin and the Wachusett Reservoirs.

State Police say there were no warrants or advisories on any of the individuals and “there was no evidence that the seven were committing any crime beyond the trespassing.”

Internet access more important

What do affluent Americans look for when picking a hotel for vacation?

It’s not beach access, fitness centers or privacy but something far more practical: Internet access, according to the Resonance Report on Affluent Travel and Leisure released Thursday.

Firenze Sage; He rubbed me, he rubbed me not [Michael Jackson]

He rubbed me …
Wade Robson, who once took the stand to defend Michael Jackson against sexual molestation charges, now says the pop star sexually abused him for seven years.
‘He is now fighting for money from the Jackson’s estate and asking a probate court to allow him to file a late creditor’s claim against the estate, even though the deadline has passed for creditors to file such claims. The estate’s lawyer, Howard Weitzman, has dismissed Robson’s claims.

Don’t bug me! [edible insects?]

Pass the bugs please.

An insect a day keeps the doctor away.

The latest weapon in the U.N.’s fight against hunger, global warming and pollution might be flying by you right now.

Edible insects are being promoted as a low-fat, high-protein food for people, pets and livestock.

According to the U.N., they come with appetizing side benefits: Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and livestock pollution, creating jobs in developing countries and feeding the millions of hungry people in the world.

Firenze Sage: She lies for the President [ U.N. Rice]

Rice lies for Obama

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice was honored Tuesday night with the 2013 Louis E. Martin Great American Award.

Specifically, the organization is honoring Rice for ”her work in advancing U.S. interests, strengthening the world’s common security and prosperity, and promoting respect for human rights,” another press release states.

Rice has “the absolute, total, complete confidence of the president,” Biden said at a gala for the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, according to press reports. “When she speaks… no one wonders whether or not she is speaking for the president.”

Firenze Sage: Welcome to the animal kingdom [vultures]

Vultures eat carcuss
Vultures eat carcass

A campaign against Griffon vultures is gathering pace in France after it was revealed that the carrion eaters had devoured the body of a 52-year-old woman who fell to her death in the Pyrenees.

Major Didier Pericou of the gendarmerie said the woman had fallen down a 300-metre slope while taking a short cut walking with two friends.

“There were only bones, clothes and shoes left,” he told The Times.

“They took 45 to 50 minutes to eat the body.”

French farmers are now demanding the right to shoot the protected birds after attacks on sheep and cows.

The birds no longer have their diet of carcasses because European health and safety regulations now force breeders to burn dead animals.
