Eight miles from Aptos resides artist Roberta Ruiz in Mid-Town. She writes of Eduardo Carrillo paintings and upcoming show www.freedomOK.net/wordpress

Artist Roberta Ruiz writes:
“The amount of work and the breath of images that Eduardo Carrillo created were not apparent to all of us who knew him at the university. He was understated, nurturing, and easy in his demeanor. When looking at his work I “get” the outrageousness of living, while recording your thoughts and impressions in paint and being totally committed to doing it. His paintings have modesty, humor and a biting reserve.

‘Eduardo’s color comes out of his involvement with the paint. It produces a sense of light as well as time and an abundance of pattern. Color plays off color in creating context and image. He paints mythology, history, and everyday life here and in Mexico transforming it with his personal vision and craft.

“In Las Tropicanas, a painting with a complex structure, Ed creates an unexpected clash of figures embedded into their environment within his own personal mythology. It’s like the Aztecs meeting Las Vegas in LA. Pattern is everywhere. Color is acidic. The toad is central in the image, holding the space. With one limb raised, it looks unflinchingly at the viewer. There are beautiful women, with patterns all over their bodies. One blows smoke out of her mouth in the form of lines to conjure up ten skeletons formed by the same kind of lines. Another stands facing a hummingbird. An archer lies on the ground, the eyes, two white dots of paint, seer at the viewer.

“In the Flight of Sor Juana, Sor Juana is flung over the chair; the color – hot pastel. She is in ecstasy beneath the Crucifix. The shadow on the cross above the chest holds the space for Christ’s head, but instead we find his face on the chest of the crucified like a tattoo of a modern day Chicano….

“A similar humor surfaces in El Chinaco. Historically, a Chinaco was a mestizo of humble origins, a guerrelliero who fashioned a place for himself of personal independence and culture. Here in Ed’s painting, the figure in its entire splendor rides a strong steed into the sunset….

Reaching for Coatlique. In the myth of the Aztecs, Coatlique is the earth and loving mother producing and consuming everything that lives. In the painting the two figures are lying, twisting horizontally, she with a snake wrapped around her arm, reaching out. He goes for the snake. His fingers almost touch it’s head. The patterned cloth sets the space. Simple?

More of Roberta’s writings can be found in a forthcoming catalogue on Edwardo Carrillo.

Aptos psychologist: melatonin for sleep helps children with autistic spectrum disorders per large poll of parents. Tell your doctor first. Do not give with over the counter pain medications. www.freedomOK.net/wordpress

Melatonin helps children go to sleep and sleep better per Autism Research Institute’s poll of over 1200 parents. Find out about other over the counter supplements such as cod liver oil and vitamins. For more complete information, go to the web site for Autism Research Institute.

“The parents of autistic children represent a vast and important reservoir of information on the benefits-and adverse effects- of the large variety of drugs and other interventions that have been tried with their children. Since 1967 the Autism Research Institute has been collecting parent ratings of the usefulness of the many interventions tried on their autistic children.

“The following data have been collected from the more than 26,000 parents who have completed our questionnaires designed to collect such information. For the purposes of the present table, the parents responses on a six-point scale have been combined into three categories: “made worse” (ratings 1 and 2), “no effect” (ratings 3 and 4), and “made better” (ratings 5 and 6). The “Better:Worse” column gives the number of children who “Got Better” for each one who “Got Worse.”

“There are three sections: Drugs, Biomedical/Non-Drug/Supplements, and Special Diets. Download a one-page Adobe (.pdf) file containing all three sections.

A. “Worse” refers only to worse behavior. Drugs, but not nutrients, typically also cause physical problems if used long-term.
B. No. of cases is cumulative over several decades, so does not reflect current usage levels (e.g., Haldol is now seldom used).
C. Antifungal drugs and chelation are used selectively, where evidence indicates they are needed.
D. Seizure drugs: top line behavior effects, bottom line effects on seizures.
E. Calcium effects are not due to dairy-free diet; statistics are similar for milk drinkers and non-milk drinkers.

Thousands of miles from Aptos: A young, tough Marine tells it like it is. www.freedomOK.net/wordpress

Marine in Afganistan
Marine in Afghanistan
MARINE RECON REPORT
Political correctness doesn’t mean beans to this tough young warrior.“It’s freezing here. I’m sitting on hard, cold dirt between rocks and shrubs at the base of the Hindu Kush Mountains along the Dar’yoi Pomir River watching a hole that leads to a tunnel that leads to a cave. Stake out, my friend, and no pizza delivery for thousands of miles.

“I also glance at the area around my ass every ten to fifteen seconds to avoid another scorpion sting. I’ve actually given up battling the chiggers and sand fleas, but them scorpions give a jolt like a cattle prod. Hurts like a bastard. The antidote tastes like transmission fluid but God bless the Marine Corps for the five vials of it in my pack.

“The one truth the Taliban cannot escape is that, believe it or not, they are human beings, which means they have to eat food and drink water. That requires couriers and that’s where an old bounty hunter like me comes in handy. I track the couriers, locate the tunnel entrances and storage facilities, type the info into the handheld, shoot the coordinates up to the satellite link that tells the air commanders where to drop the hardware, we bash some heads for a while, then I track and record the new movement.

I”t’s all about intelligence. We haven’t even brought in the snipers yet. These scurrying rats have no idea what they’re in for. We are but days away from cutting off supply lines and allowing the eradication to begin. I dream of bin Laden waking up to find me standing over him with my boot on his throat as I spit into his face and plunge my nickel plated Bowie knife through his frontal lobe. But you know me. I’m a romantic. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: This country blows, man. It’s not even a country. There are no roads, there are no infrastructure, there’s no government. This is an inhospitable, rock pit shit hole ruled by eleventh century warring tribes.

‘There are no jobs here like we know jobs.

“Afghanistan offers two ways for a man to support his family: join the opium trade or join the army. That’s it. Those are your options. Oh, I forgot, you can also live in a refugee camp and eat plum-sweetened, crushed beetle paste and squirt mud like a goose with stomach flu if that’s your idea of a party. But the smell alone of those tent cities of the walking dead is enough to hurl you into the poppy fields to cheerfully scrape bulbs for eighteen hours a day.

“I’ve been living with these Tajiks and Uzbeks and Turkmen and even a couple of Pushtins for over a month and a half now and this much I can say for sure: These guys, all of ’em, are Huns … actual, living Huns. They LIVE to fight. It’s what they do. It’s ALL they do. They have no respect for anything, not for their families or for each other or for themselves.

They claw at one another as a way of life. They play polo with dead calves and force their five-year-old sons into human cockfights to defend the family honor. Huns,r oaming packs of savage, heartless beasts who feed on each other’s barbarism. Cavemen with AK47’s. Then again, maybe I’m just cranky.

I’m freezing my ass off on this stupid hill because my lap warmer is running out of juice and I can’t recharge it until the sun comes up in a few hours.

Oh yeah! You like to write letters, right? Do me a favor, Bizarre. Write a letter to CNN and tell Wolf and Anderson and that awful, sneering, pompous Aaron Brown to stop calling the Taliban smart. They are not smart. I suggest CNN invest in a dictionary because the word they are looking for is cunning. The Taliban are cunning, like jackals and hyenas and wolverines. They are sneaky and ruthless and, when confronted, cowardly. They are hateful, malevolent parasites who create nothing and destroy everything else. Smart. Pfft. Yeah, they’re real smart.

They’ve spent their entire lives reading only one book (and not a very good one, as books go) and consider hygiene and indoor plumbing to be products of the devil. They’re still figuring out how to work a BIC lighter. Talking to a Taliban warrior about improving his quality of life is like trying to teach an ape how to hold a pen; eventually he just gets frustrated and sticks you in the eye with it.

OK, enough. Snuffle will be up soon so I have to get back to my hole. Covering my tracks in the snow takes a lot of practice but I’m good at it. Please, I tell you and my fellow Americans to turn off the TV sets and move on with your lives.

The story line you are getting from CNN and other news agencies is utter bullshit and designed not to deliver truth but rather to keep you glued to the screen through the commercials. We’ve got this one under control. The worst thing you guys can do right now is sit around analyzing what we’re doing over here because you have noidea what we’re doing and, really, you don’t want to know. We are your military and we are doing what you sent us here to do. You wanna help? Buy Bonds America .

Aptos mother: Stay HOME and make great CRAB & RICE for your KIDS on Mother’s Day! www.freedomOK.net/wordpress

Great simple food on Monther’s Day: Have plenty of fresh picked crab and shrimp, a casarole dish buttered on bottom and sides, 2 cups rice cooked (4 1/4 c good water, 2 cups Uncle Ben type rice, plenty of shredded chedder cheese and whatever else cheese in refrigerator, fresh nutmeg, 2 Tbsp. sherry.

Start with a layer of rice, then a layer of warm Alfredo sauce (kind all ready to put on pasta), layer of seafood, dash of nutmeg, sprinkle a Tbsp. of sherry. Layer again. Finish with sauce on top.

Cook at 325 degrees in oven with tin foil or top on for half an hour and then remove top. So gets bubbly and a bit brown. Cook slow so the seafood permeates the rice and sauce. Easy to make. Great food to serve your kids on Mother’s Day. Then put up your feet and give thanks for FAMILY!

Serve with salad and french bread.

Aptos attorney: Make the Public Meeting Public!

Require that the rulers/ respresentaitive disclose their views ahead of public meetings.

Share

James Jackson, Esq.
James Jackson, Esq.
The current public meeting scenario goes something like this: The governing body, hereinafter rulers, assembles ensconced in their segregated area surrounded by staff. The public fidgets in their assigned area while first staff and then legal staff imparts data. Finally the public statements, limited in time, commence. Then the rulers deliver their ukase.

This is no better than an American version of Hyde Park Corner. Words delivered to the wind.

I propose that from now on all rulers must, 3 days before a hearing of public interest, post their tentative view of the issue along with their reasons for holding the view. Ideally they would also be required to post the contrary view and reasons. But that can wait another time.

Should a ruler not post her view, she is disqualified from voting on the issue. Should she miss 3 postings, she is recalled.

Now we can have a meeting where the public knows who stand where. Now the public can address pertinent issues rather than just orating with the hope that something will apply to some ruler’s hidden view. And this process will tell us something of the thought process,if any,of the particular ruler.

It is much more difficult to be a secret toady of a special interest if she must reason publicly. If she displays her opinion with reasons, it may be that she is just factually incorrect and this can be remedied. And argument, which just might be persuasive, can be brought to bear on a particular reason. But only if one knows the reason.

So let us have a much more involved public. Lets have a more open set of rulers.

Aptos: Three members of MS-13 street gang arrested in Aptos 4-23-09

Sting nets large meth bust in Aptos
Modified: Saturday, Apr 25th, 2009
BY: PETER SEGALL

“More than three pounds of methamphetamine and a stolen handgun were seized and three suspects were arrested by members of the Santa Cruz Police Department in a joint gang/drug sting in Aptos on Wednesday.

German Escobar arrested in Aptos
German Escobar arrested in Aptos

Steve Clark of the Santa Cruz Police Department said this was a “significant amount” of the drug and that someone capable of obtaining this quantity was most likely “well-established in the network.”

The arrests were made after members of SCPD’s Street Crimes Unit worked in collaboration with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit to purchase the drugs in Aptos from men identified as members of the Mara Salvatrucha “MS-13” street gang, according to a press release from SCPD.

The drugs were estimated at a wholesale value of $42,000. When sold on the street, police estimate that amount could double. Local law enforcement has taken notice of the increasing amount of gangs using drug trafficking as a means of support. A seizure of this size represents to officers that individuals are dealing in large quantities.

The three suspects, Pedro Escobar, 22, German Escobar, 23, and Jose Callejas-Alfaro, 29, all Santa Cruz residents, were each charged with possession of methamphetamine for sale, conspiracy to commit a crime, and gang enhancements, police said. German Escobar and Callejas-Alfaro were also charged with resisting arrest. German Escobar was additionally charged with possession of a stolen, loaded handgun, which he tried to discard while attempting to flee, police said. The handgun was reported stolen out of Wilkesboro, N.C.

Aptos psychologist: Conservatorships protect developmentally disabled persons. Your regional center can test & provide report to Superior Courts.

With a few modifications, this is from the Santa Clara web site.

“Who decides if an adult is developmentally disabled (DD)?

“The Regional Center in your community (San Andreas Regional Center covers Santa Clara County, Santa Cruz County, San Benito and Monterey County) will test the proposed conservatee to see if s/he is developmentally disabled.

“Generally, a person qualifies as developmentally disabled if s/he has an IQ less than 70 or is diagnosed with autism. There are five eligible conditions to qualify under at any age for Regional Center services. The dsability must have been present before the person became age eighteen.

“Other conditions can qualify too. If the Regional Center accepted the person as a consumer shortly after birth, then s/he automatically qualifies.

But, if the person has never been tested or accepted as a regional center consumer, s/he must be tested.

“If the Regional Center feels the person does not qualify, and you disagree, you can appeal to the Area Board in your region. In Santa Clara County, the area board supervising the San Andreas Regional Center is Area Board VII.

“What kinds of decisions does a limited conservator make?

At the hearing, the judge will say exactly what rights the conservator has.

Because developmentally disabled people can usually do many things on their own, the judge will only give the limited conservator power to do things the conservatee cannot do without help.

The conservator may:

* Decide where the DD adult will live (but, NOT in a locked facility).
* Look at the DD’s adult confidential records and papers.
* Sign a contract for the DD adult.
* Give or withhold consent for most medical treatment (NOT sterilization and certain other procedures).
* Make decisions about the DD adult’s education and vocational training.
* Place the DD adult at a state hospital for the developmentally disabled (a locked facility, like Agnews Developmental Center).
* Give or withhold consent to the DD adult’s marriage.
* Control the DD adult’s social and sexual contacts and relationships.
* Manage the DD adult’s financial affairs.

“Any adult developmentally disabled person for whom guardianship or
conservatorship is sought pursuant to this article shall be informed
by a member or designee of the regional center and by the court of
the person’s right to counsel; and if the person does not have an
attorney for the proceedings the court shall immediately appoint the
public defender or other attorney to represent the person. The
person shall pay the cost for such legal service if able.

“If an affidavit or certificate has been filed, as provided in
Section 416.7, evidencing the inability of the alleged
developmentally disabled person to be present at the hearing, the
psychologist …. assisting in preparing the report and
who is required to visit each person as provided in Section 416.8
shall communicate such information to the person during the visit,
consult the person to determine the person’s opinion concerning the
appointment, and be prepared to testify as to the person’s opinion,
if any.

416.17. It is the intent of this article that the director when
acting as guardian or conservator of the person of a developmentally
disabled person through the regional center as provided in Section
416.19 of this article, shall maintain close contact with the
developmentally disabled person no matter where such person is living
in this state; shall act as a wise parent would act in caring for
his developmentally disabled child; and shall permit and encourage
maximum self-reliance on the part of the developmentally disabled
person under his protection.

Pediatric concierge instead of mother-in-laws

A friend in Aptos has one son who is married, age 30 and about to be a father in a couple of months. The son’s mother-in-law is an Emergency Room nurse. His mother is a child psychologist. So there is plenty of family expertise handy. This young man has decided to have a concierge pediatrician to be available 24 hours a day to answer questions and be readily available. Guess that’s one way to make sure he is not mother-in-law or mother pecked as to how to manage the first grand-child!
